Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, a global leader in the fight to eradicate child’s HIV and AIDS, today announced that Dr. Landon Myer University of Cape Town, South Africa Foundation 2011 International Leadership Award (ILA) of the recipient. Notification of award of the 2011 Conference on Retro viruses and opportunistic infections (CROI), held this year in Boston, Massachusetts.

Ila prizes generously funded by Stavros Niarchos Foundation (http://www.SNF.org), an international philanthropic organization that makes grants to arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare.

Ila three years focused on international aid work in the prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV care and treatment of HIV and AIDS. Recipients are scientists, doctors and implementers in resource poor settings, the capacity for developing and managing programs that will help to eliminate childhood AIDS in countries where they live.

research will help drive innovative new ways to deliver antiretroviral therapy for HIV-positive pregnant women in their native South Africa, said Jeffrey Safrit, PhD, director of clinical and basic research for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Ila grant will fund Dr. Myers community projects Gugulethu outside Cape Town, South Africa, where in 2009, HIV incidence was 28% for pregnant women to attend ante-natal services. Dr. Myer will seek to identify the main obstacles for starting highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), HIV-positive women in Gugulethu who are in need of treatment and the development, implementation and testing of various strategies for overcoming these obstacles.

There is a tremendous honor to be selected for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation International Leadership Award, said Dr. Myer. The emphasis on education and skills of this award is particularly exciting because it provides an opportunity to help develop the next generation of leaders in South Africa HIV / AIDS prevention, care and treatment.

Dr. Myer is an epidemiologist based at the School of Public Health and Family Medicine and the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre, University of Cape Town. His work has focused on HIV / AIDS treatment and prevention, with particular reference to Maternal and Child Health.
