New York, NY (PRWeb) 16 May 2012

number of women dying during pregnancy and childbirth related complications almost doubled in the last 20 years, according to new estimates released today by the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and The World Bank.

“I am very pleased to see that the number of women dying during pregnancy and childbirth continue to decline. This shows that the extra effort of countries, with support from UNFPA and other development partners, is worthwhile. But we can not stop here. our work continuing to do all the pregnancy wanted and every birth safe, “said Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Director of UNFPA and the United Nations Population Fund.

report maternal mortality: 1990 to 2010, shows that from 1990 to 2010, the annual number of deaths fell from 543 000 to more than 287.000 decline of 47 percent. While much progress has been achieved in almost all regions, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, many countries will fail to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) aimed at reducing maternal mortality by 75 percent since 1990 to 2015.

every two minutes a woman dies of complications related to pregnancy, the four most common causes are: severe bleeding after childbirth, infections, high blood pressure during pregnancy and unsafe abortion. Ninety-nine percent of deaths occur in developing countries, most can be prevented with proven interventions.

We know exactly what to do to avoid death: improving access to voluntary family planning, investment in health with midwifery skills, and provide access to emergency care when the causes of complications. These interventions have proven to save lives and accelerate progress towards Millennium Development 5, “said Dr. Osotimehin.

there are differences within and between countries and regions. One third of all deaths that occur in only two countries in 2010, nearly 20 percent of deaths (56 000) were in India and 14 percent (40,000) in Nigeria. Of 40 countries in the world highest rate of maternal mortality, 36 in sub-Saharan Africa.

Likewise, East Asia, which has made most progress in preventing deaths, contraceptive prevalence rate of 84 percent as opposed to only 22 percent in sub-Saharan Africa, the region has the highest rate of maternal mortality.

“More than a quarter of a million women still die during pregnancy and childbirth each year and more than 215 million women do not have access to modern contraceptives. Meeting the need for voluntary family planning for these women not only to fulfill human rights, it will also reduce the number of deaths by one third. This is a very cost-effective public health policy, said Dr. Osotimehin.

report also shows:

? In 2010, the global maternal mortality is 210 deaths per 100,000 live births. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of maternal mortality at 500 deaths per 100,000 live births.

? In sub-Saharan Africa, women face 1 in 39 lifetime risk of dying from pregnancy or childbirth related complications. In Southeast Asia, the risk is 1 in 290 in developed countries, it is 1 in 3800th
?

Ten countries have 60 percent of global deaths: India (56,000), Nigeria (40,000), Republic of Congo (15,000), Pakistan (12000), Sudan (10,000), Indonesia (9600), Ethiopia (9000) , United Republic of Tanzania (8500), Bangladesh (7200) and Afghanistan (6400).
?

Ten countries have already achieved the MDG target of 75 per cent reduction in maternal mortality: Belarus, Bhutan, Equatorial Guinea, Estonia, Iran, Lithuania, Maldives, Nepal, Romania and Vietnam.
An important task of making it difficult to assess accurately the lack of reliable data on mortality. In many developing countries, deaths go uncounted and often the cause is not registered properly, especially when women are dying at home. It stood in the current analysis of the plan.

“These new estimates indicate that maternal health is happening on a global level and to improve the quality of data. It also shows how the UN works together to improve the situation of women and girls worldwide,” said Dr. Osotimehin.

development of maternal deaths, 1990 – 2010 includes a detailed description of the methodology and underlying data used to develop the plan.
