The study analyzes data on the success of pregnancy in 1317 women with epilepsy. One group of women who use conventional antiepileptic drugs on Di-Phen/Dilantin/Phenytek (phenytoin), Depacon (valproate) and Tegretol (carbamazepine). Another group used a new anti-epileptic drugs containing Lamictal, Keppra and Topamax. The third group served as controls and do not use drugs.
This study has shown that the incidence of birth defects for each of the three new products was equal to or lower than the rate for untreated controls. Was 5.2 percent. However, 16.3 percent of women who use drugs containing valproate children who are born with birth defects.
